I found that rats and squirrels can climb and slide down to get the food in the bird feeders so i used a old plastic pop bottle ,now they just fall to the ground.. Poison: rodent poisons can easily be eaten by birds, and mice that have eaten the poison are more vulnerable to become prey for raptors, and thus contaminate the birds as well. ideally, only use poisons for indoor rodent control if absolutely necessary.. Store smart: store your bird seed in airtight, watertight, rodent-proof containers away from where rodents live. carry the container out to the bird feeder, rather than shoveling bird food (and spilling waste) in your house or garage..
Rats are very intelligent when it comes to food. they can scale ,climb and jump till they get to food, and food includes your birds. you are liable to find your birds heads chewed off. instead of rat proofing your table,get rid of the rats. rats carry diseases. it's not a good idea to be walking through their droppings either.. I have found a rat proof & squirrell proof bird feeder. basically it is a cage that allows the birds to get to the feeder (seperate but cheap) but not bigger birds or vermin. to reduce spillage i have cut some mesh to catch the spillage..
